Understanding Direct Cremation in Singapore

For some families, a simple and private farewell is the most meaningful way to honour their loved one. Direct cremation offers an alternative to a traditional funeral, allowing families to say goodbye in a quieter setting, in accordance with their wishes, beliefs and traditions.

Unlike a traditional funeral, a direct cremation does not include a multi-day wake or funeral procession. Instead, the necessary arrangements are completed before the cremation, with the option to include a private farewell or religious rites, depending on your family's preferences.

Common elements of a direct cremation service in Singapore include:

  • Cremation without a multi-day funeral wake or public visitation
  • A simple and private farewell involving close family members
  • The option to include religious prayers or rituals before cremation
  • Cremation is arranged after the necessary documentation and permits are completed

Even without a formal service, a farewell can hold just as much meaning. At Unity Casket, we help families arrange a direct cremation that reflects their loved one’s wishes.

Have Questions? We’re Here For You

How soon can direct cremation be arranged?

Arrangements can begin once the passing has been certified and the necessary details are in hand. The cremation date and time depend on the available timing at the crematorium.

We’ll keep you informed at each step and arrange things as quickly as the process allows.

What’s included in the direct cremation package?

Our direct cremation package includes the collection of the deceased from a hospital or home, transportation to our care facility, dressing and makeup, a dignified hearse, a cremation permit application, a cremation slot booking, ash collection, and support from our professional funeral service team.

Is direct cremation the same as cremation without a funeral service?

Direct cremation is commonly described as cremation without a traditional funeral service or multi-day wake. However, this doesn’t mean the family can’t say goodbye, as close family members and friends may pay their final respects at the crematorium's service hall before moving on to the viewing hall for the cremation.

This may take the form of a quiet farewell or a religious ceremony, providing a meaningful opportunity to honour, remember, and bid a final goodbye before the cremation takes place.

Can families attend a direct cremation funeral?

Yes. Family members and friends may be present at the crematorium's service hall to pay their final respects and say goodbye before the cremation.

As direct cremation doesn’t include a traditional wake, the farewell is usually smaller and more private. Our team will explain the schedule and what to expect on the day.

How can I prepare for a direct cremation funeral service?

You may prepare a complete set of clothing for the deceased, along with identification and the death certificate. It’s also helpful to let us know about any religious preferences, final wishes and plans for the ashes.

Our funeral team will advise you on the documents required and whether any personal items may be placed with the deceased.

What happens to the ashes after cremation?

Ash collection service is included in our direct cremation package. Families may choose to place the ashes in a columbarium, arrange a sea burial, or have them scattered at the Garden of Serenity.

Columbarium placement, sea burial, and inland ash-scattering services are separate arrangements and may involve additional charges. Our team can explain the available options and help you decide what’s appropriate for your family.

Can we arrange a memorial service after direct cremation?

Yes. We can assist families hold a memorial gathering, prayer service or private remembrance to honour the deceased after the direct cremation, at a later date.

For Buddhist and Taoist, we can also facilitate 7th day (头七) prayers, 49th day (散饭) prayers, 100th day (谢土) prayers, first-year anniversary (换红,填库) ceremonies, and last birthday (冥延) ceremonies.

What other funeral services do you provide?

In addition to direct cremation services, we provide funeral packages for Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, Catholic, and Free-Thinker families. We also assist with sea burial and inland ash scattering services.

Are your funeral homes available 24/7?

Yes. Our Unity funeral parlours and on-call team are available 24 hours a day across Singapore, ready to support you with immediate arrangements whenever needed.

Can I pre-plan the details of my own funeral?

Yes. We offer pre-planning services to arrange your personal last wishes and requirements ahead of time for your peace of mind when the time comes.
